City runs bring together professionals and amateur athletes to compete in a usually very atmospheric setting. The special thing about city runs are the routes through the city centres. In some major cities such as Berlin, Paris or Vienna, you run right past the most famous sights.
Streets are cordoned off especially for these events and there are usually thousands of spectators along the route, cheering on both professional and amateur runners and making the competition an impressive experience.
At most city runs, you can choose between different race distances. As a rule, there are various gradations from 3 km to the marathon distance. This means that there is a suitable distance for every participant, regardless of fitness level.
One of the first city runs was organised in Halle in 1919. City runs have been very popular since 1980 and attract more and more spectators and runners every year. Many major marathon events are city runs, such as the Berlin Marathon or the world-famous New York City Marathon.
The oldest German city races are the Frankfurt and Duisburg Marathons. These have been organised annually since 1981 and are attracting more and more enthusiastic runners.
The most famous German city run, however, is the Berlin Marathon, which attracts over 40,000 runners from all over the world every year.
The largest city run with over 60,000 participants is the JPMorgan Chase in Frankfurt.
