Austria, with its breathtaking Alpine landscapes, offers a wide range of mountain runs suitable for both beginners and experienced runners. These events combine a sporting challenge with stunning nature experiences. Here are some of the most outstanding mountain running events you should consider adding to your running calendar:
Spring in Austria marks the start of the mountain running season, with events that take runners through blooming landscapes and mild temperatures.
The Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival takes place annually in early May in Innsbruck, Tyrol. It offers various distances ranging from 7 km to 110 km, guiding runners through the impressive Alpine surroundings of Innsbruck. The courses combine urban sections with challenging mountain trails, providing a diverse running experience.
Held at the end of May, the Schafberglauf in St. Wolfgang, Upper Austria, attracts runners with its 7.2 km course featuring an elevation gain of 1,188 meters. Participants climb to the summit of Schafberg, where they are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Salzkammergut region.
The Schneeberglauf in Puchberg am Schneeberg, Lower Austria, is a historic event that challenges runners to reach the summit of Lower Austria’s highest mountain. Covering 10 km and 1,200 meters of elevation gain, runners compete in a “man vs. machine” challenge, racing against a steam train of the Schneebergbahn. In addition, the Schneeberg Trail offers 20 km and 31 km distances for those seeking an even greater challenge.
Summer provides ideal conditions for mountain runs, with longer days and stable weather.
The Grossglockner Mountain Run in Heiligenblut, Carinthia, is a major highlight in July, attracting over 1,000 participants. The 13.3 km course takes runners up to 2,369 meters, directly beneath Austria’s highest peak, the Grossglockner. The high-altitude Alpine scenery and the challenging ascent make this a truly unforgettable race.
Also held in July, the Traunsee Mountain Marathon in Gmunden, Upper Austria, offers distances of 30 km, 33 km, and 63 km. The race routes circle Lake Traunsee, providing spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and a demanding yet scenic experience.
Autumn is known for its clear air and vibrant landscapes, making it the perfect season for mountain running.
Not only is the landscape stunning at the adidas TERREX INFINITE TRAILS in Gastein, Salzburg, but the event’s race format is also unique in the trail running scene. Teams of three runners must cover 100 kilometers and 7,600 meters of elevation gain together, with each team member running one of three different-length routes. In addition to the team competition, individual runners can choose from various distance options.
