Spitsbergen Marathon

​The Spitsbergen Marathon is an extraordinary annual running event held in Longyearbyen, the administrative center of Svalbard, Norway. Renowned as the world's northernmost marathon, it offers participants a unique opportunity to race under the Midnight Sun, with continuous daylight illuminating the Arctic landscape.

Race Distances

• Marathon (42.195 km): A full marathon course that challenges runners amidst the stark beauty of the Arctic terrain.​
• Half Marathon (21.0975 km): A half-distance race offering a taste of the polar running experience.​
• Spitsbergenmila (10 km): A 10-kilometer race suitable for those seeking a shorter yet equally scenic challenge.​
• Spitsbergen Mini Marathon: Designed for children aged 0-15 years, with distances of 1 km and 3 km to encourage young participation.

Course Overview

The marathon and half marathon courses consist of a 21 km loop through and around Longyearbyen. Marathon participants complete two laps, briefly passing the arena near Svalbardhallen before embarking on the second loop. The route traverses open Arctic landscapes, offering runners the chance to encounter local wildlife such as reindeer and various bird species along the way. 

Registration and Participation

Given Svalbard's limited flight options and accommodation capacity, participants are advised to book travel and lodging well in advance. Registration for the marathon typically opens several months prior to the event, with early booking recommended to secure a spot.

Additional Information

All participants aged 13 to 80 are required to have a license from the Norwegian Athletics Federation (NFIF). Both one-time and annual licenses are available for purchase during registration.

The marathon is open to runners aged 18 and above, while the half marathon welcomes participants from age 16. The 10 km race is available to individuals aged 13 and older, with separate timed and untimed categories.
