Murtenlauf in Murten

Description

The Murtenlauf is a historic running classic in Switzerland that perfectly combines history and running. The Murtenlauf has been held since 1933, making it one of the oldest running events in the whole of Switzerland. The popularity of the Murtenlauf on the international running scene is also reflected in the impressive number of participants. Every year, around 13,000 participants take part in this fun run. This means that more participants take part in the Murtenlauf than the town of Murten itself has inhabitants.

There are two running distances to choose from at the Murtenlauf. You can choose between an 8.68 km and a 17.17 km course, with the long course being the main run. This leads directly from Murten to Fribourg and runs on asphalt throughout. The run itself takes place in memory of the Murten Runner. Legend has it that in 1476, the Murten Runner conveyed the outcome of the Battle of Murten to the people of Fribourg. Immediately after delivering the message, the Murten Runner collapsed and died.
